## Andersen A3 features explained

### What is the Andersen A3?

The A3 is a single-phase home charger from Andersen EV, a company based in Bedfordshire. Its 5.5 m tethered cable is stored inside the housing when it is not in use, and the front comes in 13 colours as standard, with Accoya wood and special-edition finishes at extra cost. Andersen also sells the Quartz (smaller, with socket or tethered versions) and the A2 (hidden cable, with three-phase and longer-cable options).

### Charging power: 7 kW single-phase, no 22 kW version

Andersen markets the A3 as a 7 kW charger for single-phase homes. Its installer manual rates it at 7.2 kW, 32 A at 230 V, adjustable from 6 A to 32 A. There is no three-phase A3. The rate your car charges at is also limited by its own onboard charger.

### Tethered cable: 5.5 m

The A3 has a 5.5 m tethered Type 2 cable that stores inside the unit. It is not available with a socket or a longer cable; Andersen points customers who need an 8.5 m cable to the A2.

### Solar charging with CT clamps

Andersen lists the A3 as solar compatible. The installer manual describes two configurations:

- **Solar Basic / Adaptive Fuse** uses the supplied grid CT clamp, which monitors the whole property and any export.
- **Solar Advanced** uses an additional solar CT clamp on the generation circuit, which is purchased separately.

In the Andersen app, the Power Source settings let you top up solar charging with grid power using a slider. Solar monitoring needs a CT clamp to be installed and configured.

### Smart charging with Octopus, E.ON Next and OVO

Charging can be scheduled and the charger locked remotely in the Andersen app. Andersen's comparison table lists smart tariff integration with Intelligent Octopus Go, OVO Charge Anytime and EDF GoElectric.

On the energy suppliers' own lists (checked 4 October 2026):

- **Octopus Energy** lists the Andersen A3 as supported for Intelligent Octopus Go.
- **OVO Energy** lists Andersen as a compatible smart charger for Charge Anytime.
- **E.ON Next** does not list Andersen for Next Drive Smart.

### Load balancing, earthing and installation

An Adaptive Fuse CT clamp is included as standard; the installer manual lists the charging current as CT-monitored and adjustable between 6 A and 32 A. It also lists PEN fault detection conforming to BS 7671 regulation 722.411.4.1, internal 6 mA DC protection (EN 62955) and 30 mA AC protection, plus earth, welded contactor and PME monitoring. Andersen says there is no earth rod requirement. The manual recommends upstream protection of a 40 A RCBO, or a Type A RCD with a 40 A B curve MCB.

### App, Wi-Fi and connectivity

The A3 connects over Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz); Bluetooth LE 5 is used for set-up only. The app supports remote locking, and Andersen lists 128-bit encryption for its smart connectivity.

### Size and dimensions: 430 x 310 x 148 mm

The A3 measures 430 x 310 x 148 mm unboxed and weighs 9.5 kg to 11.2 kg installed. The enclosure core is polycarbonate blend, rated IP65; the Type 2 cable is rated IP44. The front is nylon-coated aluminium or Accoya wood. It operates from -25°C to +40°C, has RGB status lights and a white convenience light that lights the ground as you approach, and uses 10 W on standby. The manual lists compliance with the Electric Vehicles (Smart Charge Points) Regulations 2021.

### Warranty: 7 years

Andersen gives seven years of Andersen Care Cover following installation, subject to its warranty terms.

## Andersen A3 installation

- **Supply:** Single-phase, up to 7 kW
- **Earthing:** PEN fault protection built in, according to Andersen
- **Protection:** Internal 6 mA DC (EN 62955) and 30 mA AC; PEN fault detection
- **Load management:** Yes: adaptive Fuse CT clamp for load limiting
- **Solar sensor:** Adaptive Fuse CT clamp for load limiting
- **Connection:** Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (set-up only)

1. **Survey.** An installer checks your supply, consumer unit, main fuse and earthing, and where the charger and its cable will go. Many do this from photos first.
2. **Notify the network operator (DNO).** Your installer tells your local network operator (DNO) about the charger, and applies first where the supply needs checking.
3. **Fit and test.** The charger goes on its own circuit and is tested. Ask for the supply sensor for solar charging to be fitted on the same visit.
4. **Connect it.** The installer connects the charger to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth and sets it up in the maker's app.
5. **Set up your tariff.** If you switch to a smart tariff that lists it (Intelligent Octopus Go, OVO Charge Anytime), add the charger in the supplier's app so it can schedule charging. On a fixed-window tariff, set a schedule for the cheap hours.

## Andersen A3 FAQs

### Where does the Andersen A3 cable go?

The A3's 5.5 m tethered cable is stored inside the housing when not in use. Andersen calls this hidden charging cable technology.

### Can the Andersen A3 charge from solar?

Andersen lists the A3 as solar compatible. Its installer manual describes a basic solar mode that uses the supplied grid CT clamp, and an advanced solar mode that needs an additional solar CT clamp. In the Andersen app you can set how much grid power to add to solar.

### Does the Andersen A3 need an earth rod?

Andersen says the A3 has no earth rod requirement. The installer manual lists PEN fault detection conforming to BS 7671 regulation 722.411.4.1.

### Does the Andersen A3 work with Intelligent Octopus Go?

Yes. Octopus lists the Andersen A3 as supported for Intelligent Octopus Go, and OVO lists Andersen for Charge Anytime (both checked 4 October 2026). Andersen says all A3 chargers have been integrated with Intelligent Octopus Go since September 2025.

### What warranty does the Andersen A3 have?

Seven years of Andersen Care Cover following installation, subject to Andersen's warranty terms.

### Which chargers are similar to the Andersen A3?

Andersen Quartz, Cord Zero and Hypervolt Home 3 Pro share the most charger types with it (such as solar charging, cable type and smart tariff listings). They are listed by how many types they share, then A to Z; this is not a ranking. Compare any two side by side on our compare page.

### Does the Andersen A3 support V2H or V2G?

No. Andersen does not publish vehicle-to-home (V2H) or vehicle-to-grid (V2G) support for the Andersen A3, so it charges the car only.

### How much does the Andersen A3 cost?

We do not list prices, because they change often and most people buy a charger fitted, so the price depends on the installer and your home. Ask two or three installers for a fitted price for the Andersen A3 by name. If you rent, or own a flat with private off-street parking, the EV chargepoint grant can cover 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500.

## EV charger terms explained

- **Tethered charger:** A charger with the charging cable fixed to the unit.
- **Type 2:** The standard connector for AC charging on cars sold in the UK and Europe.
- **Single-phase and three-phase:** Most UK homes have a single-phase supply, which limits a home charger to about 7 kW (32 A). A 22 kW charger needs a three-phase supply, and the car must accept 22 kW on AC to use it.
- **kW and kWh:** kW is charging power; kWh is energy. A 7 kW charger adds up to about 7 kWh an hour, less charging losses.
- **Solar charging:** A mode that varies the charging current to follow surplus solar generation, measured by a sensor on your supply, so the car uses power you would otherwise export.
- **CT clamp:** A current sensor clipped around a supply cable. It tells the charger how much power the home is importing or exporting.
- **Load management:** The charger lowers its charging current when the rest of the home is using a lot of power, so the main fuse is not overloaded.
- **PEN fault protection:** Protection that disconnects the charger if the combined neutral and earth (PEN) conductor in the supply fails. Chargers with it built in can usually be installed without an earth rod; your installer confirms what your supply needs.
- **IP and IK ratings:** IP rates protection against dust and water (IP65 is dust tight and protected against water jets); IK rates impact resistance, from IK00 to IK10.
- **Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H):** Sending power from the car's battery back to the grid or the home. It needs a bidirectional charger, a compatible car and approval from your network operator, and V2G also needs a supplier offer.
- **Smart tariff charger list:** The chargers an energy supplier says it can control for its smart EV tariff, such as Octopus's list for Intelligent Octopus Go. Suppliers add and remove chargers, so we show the date we checked.
- **EV chargepoint grant:** A GOV.UK grant for people who rent, or own a flat, with private off-street parking. It can cover 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500 (checked 4 October 2026).
