## Before you book

1. **Choose your charger.** Pick the charger before you ask for quotes, so every installer prices the same job. We compare 26 home chargers A to Z; 25 of them have PEN fault protection built in, which usually means no earth rod.
2. **Survey and a written quote.** Most installers start with photos or a visit: where your consumer unit is, the cable route to the parking space, your main fuse and your earthing. Ask for a fixed price in writing that includes VAT and any extra work.
3. **Your network operator: NIE Networks.** Your installer tells NIE Networks about a new charger. Most single-phase home chargers can be fitted first and notified afterwards; if your supply needs work, such as a bigger main fuse or splitting a shared (looped) supply, the operator has to approve it first.
4. **Installation day.** A standard installation usually takes two to four hours: a new circuit from your consumer unit, the charger on the wall, safety checks and testing. You should get an electrical installation certificate for the new circuit.
5. **Set it up and charge for less.** Connect the app, set a schedule and switch to an EV tariff. The cheapest overnight rate we compare is 6.5p/kWh, on Intelligent Octopus Go and E.ON Next Drive Smart (November 2026).

- **Registered for electrical work.** A new circuit for a charger is work a registered electrician should certify. Check the firm on the government-approved register or its scheme's own search. Check: [Competent Persons Register](https://www.competentperson.co.uk/), [NICEIC contractor search](https://www.niceic.com/find-a-contractor), [NAPIT installer search](https://search.napit.org.uk/).
- **Authorised for the grant, if you claim it.** If you rent, or own a flat with private off-street parking, the EV chargepoint grant can cover 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500. Only an OZEV-authorised installer can claim it for you. Check: [GOV.UK chargepoint installer search](https://www.gov.uk/electric-vehicle-chargepoint-installers), [GOV.UK: EV chargepoint grant](https://www.gov.uk/electric-vehicle-chargepoint-grant-household).
- **A fixed quote in writing.** It should name the charger, the cable route, any consumer unit work and who tells the network operator, with VAT included.
- **Warranty on the charger and the work.** The charger has the maker's warranty; the installation needs the installer's own. Ask how long each lasts and who you call if the charger trips or goes offline.
