## Pod Point Solo 3S features explained

### What is the Pod Point Solo 3S?

The Solo 3S is Pod Point's home charger, sold through its site, now branded Pod (podenergy.com). It comes untethered with a Type 2 socket or tethered with a 6.5 m cable. Pod Point says it has installed over 300,000 chargers in the UK, and that the Solo 3S was named What Car? Best Value Home Charger 2025.

### Charging power: 7.4 kW single-phase

Pod Point advertises charging speeds of up to 7.4 kW. Its installation guide adds that the chargers are typically rated at 7 kW for performance and longevity, and that the rating can be increased to 7.4 kW on request. The guide lists a rated voltage of 230 V (400 V) and up to 32 A per phase. The rate your car charges at is also limited by its own onboard charger.

### Tethered or untethered: the cable options

The Universal (untethered) version has a Type 2 socket and connects to any car with the right cable. The tethered version has a 6.5 m Type 2 cable and comes with a holster.

### Solar charging with CT clamps

Pod Point lists solar integration, so you can charge with energy your home generates. Its install guide says the power balancing sensor (CT clamp) supplied with the charger lets customers use features such as solar charging.

### Smart charging with Octopus, E.ON Next and OVO

The Pod Home app schedules charging to a target charge level and ready-by time, has a Boost function to charge immediately, manages multiple vehicles and can secure the charger. Pod Point customers can earn Pod Rewards for smart charging, and have access to Pod Power by EDF, which Pod Point describes as an exclusive EV tariff for its customers.

On the energy suppliers' own lists (checked 4 October 2026), Pod Point is not listed by Octopus for Intelligent Octopus Go, by OVO for Charge Anytime, or by E.ON Next for Next Drive Smart.

### Load balancing, earthing and installation

A power balancing sensor (CT clamp) is supplied in the box and must be installed. Pod Point says it protects the upstream main fuse by letting the charger reduce its rate when needed. The charger provides 6 mA DC protection; an external 30 mA RCD (Type A, B or F, switching both poles) is required.

Pod Point's earthing information sheet says the Solo 3S has built-in PME fault protection, so no dedicated earth rod is required on TN-S and TN-C-S earthing systems. TT systems already have an earth rod and have additional RCD requirements.

### App, Wi-Fi and connectivity

The install guide lists Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz). The charger is registered with the Pod Point Installer App at installation and controlled through the Pod Home app.

### Size, dimensions and weatherproofing

The Universal version measures 330 x 290 x 167 mm and weighs 3.5 kg; the tethered version measures 330 x 290 x 112 mm and weighs 4.7 kg (height x width x depth). Both are rated IP54 and IK10 and operate from -25°C to 40°C, with charging speeds reduced at high temperatures to protect the device.

### Warranty: Up to 5 years

Pod Point quotes up to 5 years' warranty on charger and installation, with 24/7 support. Check which term applies to your purchase route before you buy.

1. **Survey.** An installer checks your supply, consumer unit, main fuse and earthing, and where the charger and its cable will go. Many do this from photos first.
2. **Notify the network operator (DNO).** Your installer tells your local network operator (DNO) about the charger, and applies first where the supply needs checking.
3. **Fit and test.** The charger goes on its own circuit and is tested. Ask for the supply sensor for solar charging to be fitted on the same visit.
4. **Connect it.** The installer connects the charger to Wi-Fi and sets it up in the maker's app.
5. **Set up your tariff.** Set a charging schedule for your tariff's cheap hours. Smart tariffs that control the charger directly do not list it, but some work through a compatible car.

## Pod Point Solo 3S FAQs

### Is the Pod Point Solo 3S 7 kW or 7.4 kW?

Pod Point advertises charging speeds of up to 7.4 kW. Its installation guide says the chargers are typically rated at 7 kW for performance and longevity, and the rating can be increased to 7.4 kW on request.

### Does the Pod Point Solo 3S need an earth rod?

Pod Point says the Solo 3S has built-in PME fault protection, so no dedicated earth rod is required on TN-S and TN-C-S earthing systems. TT systems already have an earth rod and have additional RCD requirements.

### Can the Pod Point Solo 3S charge from solar?

Pod Point lists solar integration. Its install guide says the supplied power balancing sensor (CT clamp) protects the main fuse and lets customers use features such as solar charging.

### What is Pod Power by EDF?

Pod Point describes Pod Power by EDF as an exclusive EV tariff for Pod customers. Check EDF's current rates and terms before switching.

### Does the Pod Point Solo 3S work with Intelligent Octopus Go?

Pod Point is not on Octopus's list of supported chargers for Intelligent Octopus Go (checked 4 October 2026). Octopus can also connect through some cars instead of the charger.

### Which chargers are similar to the Pod Point Solo 3S?

Andersen Quartz, Cord Zero and EO Mini Pro 3 share the most charger types with it (such as solar charging, cable type and smart tariff listings). They are listed by how many types they share, then A to Z; this is not a ranking. Compare any two side by side on our compare page.

### Does the Pod Point Solo 3S support V2H or V2G?

No. Pod Point does not publish vehicle-to-home (V2H) or vehicle-to-grid (V2G) support for the Pod Point Solo 3S, so it charges the car only.

### How much does the Pod Point Solo 3S cost?

We do not list prices, because they change often and most people buy a charger fitted, so the price depends on the installer and your home. Ask two or three installers for a fitted price for the Pod Point Solo 3S by name. If you rent, or own a flat with private off-street parking, the EV chargepoint grant can cover 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500.

## EV charger terms explained

- **Tethered charger:** A charger with the charging cable fixed to the unit.
- **Untethered (socket) charger:** A charger with a Type 2 socket instead of a fixed cable, so you plug in your own charging cable.
- **Type 2:** The standard connector for AC charging on cars sold in the UK and Europe.
- **Single-phase and three-phase:** Most UK homes have a single-phase supply, which limits a home charger to about 7 kW (32 A). A 22 kW charger needs a three-phase supply, and the car must accept 22 kW on AC to use it.
- **kW and kWh:** kW is charging power; kWh is energy. A 7 kW charger adds up to about 7 kWh an hour, less charging losses.
- **Solar charging:** A mode that varies the charging current to follow surplus solar generation, measured by a sensor on your supply, so the car uses power you would otherwise export.
- **CT clamp:** A current sensor clipped around a supply cable. It tells the charger how much power the home is importing or exporting.
- **Load management:** The charger lowers its charging current when the rest of the home is using a lot of power, so the main fuse is not overloaded.
- **PEN fault protection:** Protection that disconnects the charger if the combined neutral and earth (PEN) conductor in the supply fails. Chargers with it built in can usually be installed without an earth rod; your installer confirms what your supply needs.
- **RFID:** A card or key fob reader on the charger, used to stop other people starting a charge.
- **IP and IK ratings:** IP rates protection against dust and water (IP65 is dust tight and protected against water jets); IK rates impact resistance, from IK00 to IK10.
- **Vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and vehicle-to-home (V2H):** Sending power from the car's battery back to the grid or the home. It needs a bidirectional charger, a compatible car and approval from your network operator, and V2G also needs a supplier offer.
- **Smart tariff charger list:** The chargers an energy supplier says it can control for its smart EV tariff, such as Octopus's list for Intelligent Octopus Go. Suppliers add and remove chargers, so we show the date we checked.
- **EV chargepoint grant:** A GOV.UK grant for people who rent, or own a flat, with private off-street parking. It can cover 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500 (checked 4 October 2026).
