British Gas Electric Driver is the EV tariff for drivers who want cheap overnight charging without changing supplier. If you are already with British Gas, it is the simplest path to a dedicated overnight EV rate — and the PeakSave Sunday discount and Hive EV Charger integration make it a more rounded proposition than a headline comparison of overnight rates alone might suggest.
But if you are actively comparing tariffs and are open to switching, the rates are not class-leading. This review explains what Electric Driver offers, who it suits best, and where the alternatives pull ahead.
What Electric Driver offers
Electric Driver is a whole-home time-of-use tariff. The cheap rate of 9p/kWh applies between midnight and 5am every night — a 5-hour window. Outside that window, you pay the peak rate of 31p/kWh, with a standing charge of 52p/day.
The cheap rate applies to all electricity drawn from the grid during the overnight window, not just your EV charging. Running the washing machine or dishwasher overnight extends the saving.
The PeakSave Sunday bonus
Electric Driver includes a PeakSave benefit that gives you half-price electricity every Sunday between 11am and 4pm. You pay roughly 15.5p/kWh during that window (half the peak rate), with no action required — the discount applies automatically.
The PeakSave window is not primarily designed for EV charging, but if your car battery has capacity and you are near a socket on Sunday afternoons, it provides a second opportunity to charge at a reduced rate during the week.
Hive EV Charger integration
British Gas owns Hive, the smart home platform, and Electric Driver is designed to work alongside the Hive EV Charger. If you have a Hive charger installed, you can schedule charging sessions, monitor energy use, and manage your EV from the Hive app.
If you do not have a Hive charger, Electric Driver works with any standard charger and any EV via a simple overnight timer.
How the rates stack up
| Tariff | Off-peak rate | Peak rate | Window |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDF GoElectric Overnight | 6.99p/kWh | 25.66p/kWh | 7 hours |
| E.ON Next Drive Smart | 8p/kWh | 26.35p/kWh | 6 hours (smart) |
| Intelligent Octopus Go | 8p/kWh | 33.72p/kWh | 6 hours (smart) |
| British Gas Electric Driver | 9p/kWh | 31p/kWh | 5 hours |
Electric Driver is not the cheapest option by overnight rate or peak rate. EDF GoElectric offers 2p/kWh cheaper overnight with a longer window. E.ON Next Drive Smart matches Octopus on the overnight rate and significantly undercuts British Gas on the day rate.
The case for Electric Driver is convenience for existing British Gas customers and the additional features (PeakSave, Hive integration) that add incremental value beyond the unit rate.
Who Electric Driver is right for
Electric Driver is a good choice if you are already with British Gas and want to switch to an EV tariff with minimum friction. The savings compared to a standard variable tariff are real: British Gas estimates £330 to £490 per year for typical 7,000-mile annual home-charging.
For drivers open to switching supplier, EDF GoElectric, E.ON Next Drive Smart, and Intelligent Octopus Go all offer meaningfully better rates. Compare all options on our EV tariffs hub before deciding.
