Pros

  • 25.66p/kWh peak rate is the lowest of any major EV tariff provider in the UK
  • Fixed 7-hour overnight window (midnight to 7am) is predictable and easy to work with
  • Works with any home EV charger and any electric vehicle — no smart dispatch required
  • Whole-home tariff so all overnight appliances benefit from the cheaper rate
  • EDF is a large established supplier with strong customer service track record

Cons

  • 9p/kWh off-peak rate is higher than Octopus (8p), So Energy (6.5p), and Outfox (7.7p)
  • No smart dispatch — relies on a timer set on your car or charger
  • Not a renewable energy tariff by default
  • Fixed overnight window means you can't take advantage of cheaper daytime grid slots

EDF Energy’s GoElectric Overnight tariff holds a unique position in the UK EV tariff market. It doesn’t offer the lowest overnight rate — that goes to So Energy — but it offers something equally valuable for many households: the UK’s lowest peak daytime rate at 25.66p/kWh.

If your household uses a significant amount of electricity during the day, EDF’s GoElectric Overnight can save you more overall than a tariff with a cheaper overnight rate and a higher peak.

GoElectric Overnight — how it works

GoElectric Overnight gives every customer the same 9p/kWh off-peak rate between midnight and 7am, seven days a week. There is no smart dispatch — simply set your charger or car’s built-in timer to charge during those hours and the cheaper rate applies automatically.

The 7-hour window is one of the longest fixed overnight windows available, giving you more flexibility than Octopus Go’s 4-hour slot. A 60kWh battery costs approximately £5.40 to charge from empty during the off-peak period, compared to roughly £15.40 at the standard variable rate.

The peak rate advantage

At 25.66p/kWh, EDF’s GoElectric Overnight has the lowest peak rate of any major EV tariff. Compare this to Octopus Energy at 33.72p/kWh — a difference of 8.06p per kWh on every unit used during waking hours.

For a household consuming 10 kWh of peak-time electricity per day, that 8p difference saves approximately £294 per year compared with Octopus. That more than offsets the 1p difference between EDF’s 9p overnight rate and Octopus’s 8p rate.

This makes GoElectric Overnight the best choice if your daytime electricity consumption is high.

Who is GoElectric Overnight best for?

  • Households with people at home during the day, including homeworkers and families with children at home
  • Homes with multiple high-draw appliances used during waking hours
  • Drivers who prefer a simple, predictable fixed window without managing smart dispatch
  • Anyone who values the established reliability of EDF as a supplier

Who should look elsewhere?

If you primarily care about the overnight charging rate and your household uses relatively little electricity during the day, Octopus Intelligent Octopus Go (8p) or So Energy SO EV (6.5p) will typically be cheaper overall.

Drivers who want smart dispatch — where the tariff automatically finds the cheapest slots across a wider window — should look at Octopus or E.ON Next Drive Smart instead.

Charger and vehicle compatibility

GoElectric Overnight works with any home EV charger and any electric vehicle. There are no smart dispatch integration requirements. You need a SMETS2 smart meter, which EDF can arrange free of charge.

If you are currently an EDF customer, you can switch to GoElectric Overnight through your online account without changing supplier.

EDF’s billing and customer experience

EDF is one of the UK’s six largest energy suppliers. Billing through GoElectric Overnight is straightforward — your smart meter records your usage by time period and you’re billed at the appropriate rate. Half-hourly meter reads are transmitted automatically.

The EDF website and app allow you to view your bills, check your usage by time of day, and manage your account. The EDF app is functional but less feature-rich for EV-specific scheduling than the Octopus app.

EDF also partners with Pod Point for home charger installation. The partnership doesn’t add tariff benefits, but if you’re buying a new charger alongside the tariff, it’s worth checking availability in your area.

Our verdict on EDF GoElectric Overnight

GoElectric Overnight is an underrated tariff. Most comparison sites lead with the overnight rate, which makes Octopus and So Energy look like the obvious winners. But EDF’s 25.66p/kWh peak rate is a genuine differentiator for daytime-heavy households.

If you work from home, have children at home, or simply use more than average daytime electricity, run the numbers on EDF versus Octopus before switching. You may find EDF works out cheaper overall, even without smart dispatch.

For low daytime usage households, Octopus Intelligent Octopus Go or So Energy SO EV will offer better overall value.

Who is this tariff right for?

Households with high daytime usage

EDF's 25.66p peak rate is the lowest of any major EV tariff, so high daytime users save more overall than with rivals offering lower overnight rates but higher peaks.

Any EV or charger

GoElectric Overnight works with any home charger and any electric vehicle. No smart hardware is required — just a timer on your car or charger.

Pod Point charger owners

If you have a Pod Point home charger registered with EDF, you may qualify for the discounted 6.49p/kWh Pod Point Home rate.

Predictable billing preference

The fixed 00:00–07:00 window makes budgeting straightforward. You know exactly when cheaper electricity is available every night.

Long-term switchers

EDF suits customers happy to commit for a fixed term. The £75 exit fee means this tariff rewards loyalty and penalises mid-contract switching.

Consider alternatives if...

You plan to switch again within 12 months. The £75 exit fee reduces net savings compared to no-exit-fee rivals like Octopus Energy.
