EDF GoElectric Overnight stands out in the UK EV tariff market for one simple reason: it offers the cheapest fixed overnight rate available from any mainstream supplier. At 6.99p/kWh across a 7-hour window, it undercuts Octopus Go by 2.5p and Intelligent Octopus Go by 1p — and does so without any smart charger or compatible EV requirement.
The peak rate is also the lowest of any major EV tariff at 25.66p/kWh. For households that use significant electricity during the day and also want cheap overnight EV charging, GoElectric delivers the best combination of rates available.
This review covers everything you need to know about the GoElectric Overnight tariff, including the exit fee caveat that applies.
What GoElectric Overnight offers
GoElectric Overnight is a whole-home time-of-use tariff with a fixed overnight window from midnight to 7am every day. The 6.99p/kWh rate applies to all electricity drawn from the grid during those 7 hours — your EV charging, washing machine, dishwasher, and any other appliance you run overnight.
Outside the off-peak window, you pay the peak rate of 25.66p/kWh. The standing charge is 46p/day.
There is no smart dispatch. To benefit, you set a charging timer on your car or charger to start at midnight. At 7.4kW charging speed, a 7-hour window provides around 51.8kWh of added range — enough to fully charge most current EV batteries from near-empty in a single overnight session.
The rate comparison
| Tariff | Off-peak | Peak | Standing charge |
|---|---|---|---|
| EDF GoElectric Overnight | 6.99p/kWh | 25.66p/kWh | 46p/day |
| E.ON Next Drive Smart | 8p/kWh | 26.35p/kWh | 50p/day |
| Intelligent Octopus Go | 8p/kWh | 33.72p/kWh | 53p/day |
| Octopus Go | 9.5p/kWh | 33.72p/kWh | 53p/day |
GoElectric wins on both overnight rate and peak rate in this comparison. The standing charge is also the lowest, adding a small further advantage.
On a 60kWh battery from empty, GoElectric costs around £4.19 at 6.99p. The same charge costs £4.80 on Intelligent Octopus Go at 8p, and £5.70 on Octopus Go at 9.5p.
The smart dispatch trade-off
The one area where GoElectric falls behind Intelligent Octopus Go and E.ON Next Drive Smart is smart dispatch. Those tariffs actively optimise when within the overnight window your car charges. GoElectric does not — you simply charge during the whole 7-hour block.
For most drivers, this is not a meaningful limitation. The fixed window is long enough that nearly any EV will complete charging during it, and you are not going to find a better fixed rate elsewhere in the mainstream market.
Smart dispatch adds value primarily when you want to maximise renewable electricity or find occasional sub-rate slots during the window. For straightforward, predictable overnight charging at the lowest available fixed rate, GoElectric is the stronger choice.
The exit fee
EDF GoElectric Overnight carries a £75 exit fee if you leave before the end of your contract term. This is the tariff’s main drawback compared to Octopus Energy and E.ON Next, which charge no exit fees.
The practical implication is that you should be confident you want to stay with EDF for the contract duration before switching. If wholesale energy prices fall significantly and a better tariff becomes available mid-term, you would need to pay £75 to move. For most drivers who plan to stay for at least 12 months, this is not a major concern — but it is worth knowing.
Smart meter and setup requirements
GoElectric requires a SMETS2 smart meter. EDF will arrange installation if you do not have one. No specific charger model or EV is required beyond the smart meter.
Check your current energy supplier for any exit fees that might apply before switching.
