Ecotricity EV Tariff Review 2026

Ecotricity is one of the UK’s longest-standing green electricity suppliers, founded in the mid-1990s by Dale Vince. Long before other suppliers marketed renewable tariffs, Ecotricity was building wind turbines and supplying homes from its own generation. Its EcoFixed EV tariff brings that green heritage to EV charging, with 100% green electricity and an overnight rate that averages 7.9p/kWh from 1 October 2026.

For drivers who want to combine low-cost home charging with genuine environmental credentials, Ecotricity is one of the strongest options alongside Good Energy.

EcoFixed EV: how it works

EcoFixed EV is a whole-home time-of-use tariff, fixed for one year. You pay a reduced rate every night from midnight to 5am GMT, which is 1am to 6am while British Summer Time applies; set your charger or EV timer to charge during those hours, and the cheaper rate applies to all your home’s electricity consumption.

The tariff is open to everyone with an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle, whether you’re an existing Ecotricity customer or not. You need a smart meter sending half-hourly readings, to manage your account online, and to pay by Direct Debit. Dual fuel customers get the fixed price on gas too.

There is no smart dispatch. Scheduling is managed manually using your car or charger’s built-in timer.

What EcoFixed EV costs

Ecotricity only shows prices in a quote. Based on its published regional rates for the October 2026 version of the tariff, and with 0% VAT on household electricity from 1 October 2026 to 31 March 2027:

• Off-peak rate: 7.9p/kWh on average, from 7.66p to 8.39p/kWh depending on region
• Peak rate: 36.57p/kWh on average, from 35.51p to 38.19p/kWh
• Standing charge: 55p a day on average, from 40p to 66p a day
• Exit fee: £95.24 per fuel if you leave within the 12-month term

Unusually, the off-peak rate varies by region as well as the day rate, so check your own quote.

The renewable energy case

Ecotricity’s green credentials are well established. It:

• Supplies 100% green electricity to all customers
• Generates electricity from its own wind and solar projects across the UK
• Has been a pioneer in green energy since before it became mainstream
• Built the Electric Highway, the UK’s first motorway charging network, which it sold to GRIDSERVE in 2021

Ecotricity’s sourcing is more invested in actual UK green generation than many suppliers who simply purchase REGOs (Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin) to back up renewable claims without owning any generation assets.

Rate comparison

At an average of 7.9p/kWh, Ecotricity’s overnight rate is competitive with the big smart tariffs:

Ecotricity’s 36.57p/kWh average peak rate is its main weakness: it is among the highest of the EV tariffs we track, almost 6p/kWh above E.ON Next Drive Smart. Households that use a lot of electricity during the day will feel that.

Who is EcoFixed EV best for?

Ecotricity suits EV drivers for whom renewable energy and environmental impact are genuine priorities alongside cost:

• Drivers who want their EV miles backed by a supplier with its own green generation
• Households that shift most of their electricity use into the overnight window
• Drivers who value Ecotricity’s long history and track record in green energy
• Those who want a competitive overnight rate with a year of price certainty

Who should look elsewhere?

If you use a lot of electricity during the day, E.ON Next Drive Smart has a much lower average peak rate (30.82p/kWh), smart charging and no exit fee. If you want the cheapest overnight rate, EDF GoElectric is 6.66p/kWh for seven hours.

If smart dispatch automation is important, Intelligent Octopus Go or E.ON Next Drive Smart are the options. Ecotricity does not offer automated scheduling.

Charger and vehicle compatibility

EcoFixed EV works with any home EV charger and any electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle. There are no smart dispatch integration requirements. You need a smart meter set to half-hourly readings.

Ecotricity as a supplier

Ecotricity is a smaller supplier by customer count, but it is one of the most established names in UK green energy. Its digital tools are functional but less advanced than Octopus’s, and the EV tariff requires you to manage your account online. Customer support is available by phone and online.

Our verdict on Ecotricity EcoFixed EV

EcoFixed EV is a strong option for environmentally motivated EV drivers who want a competitive overnight rate and green electricity from a supplier with genuine green generation assets.

The high peak rate and the £95.24 per fuel exit fee are why it doesn’t rank ahead of E.ON Next or Octopus on overall cost. But for drivers who charge overnight and weigh environmental credentials alongside price, Ecotricity’s combination of a sub-8p average overnight rate, 100% green electricity and long green heritage makes it one of the most credible options in the market.
