Why chargers use mobile data

Smart chargers need an internet connection for apps, scheduling, tariff control and software updates. Most use your home Wi-Fi. Some also have a mobile data connection (4G, LTE-M or LTE Cat M1) built in, either as standard or as a model option, so they stay online if the Wi-Fi signal at the charger is weak or drops.

Data costs vary. Ohme covers the SIM data for the first three years, while Rolec says a subscription is required for its 4G models. Each listing below shows the connection options the manufacturer lists.

EV chargers with built-in 4G: questions

Does a charger with 4G still need Wi-Fi?

It depends on the model. Some, such as the Ohme Home Pro and ePod, list only a mobile data connection. Others, such as the Easee One and Cord Zero, have both; Cord says the Cord Zero switches between them automatically.

Is there a charge for the 4G connection?

Terms differ by manufacturer. For example, Ohme covers the data cost for the first three years, and Rolec says its 4G models need a subscription. Check the terms for the model you are buying.
