What a 22kW charger needs

A 22kW home charger needs a three-phase electricity supply. Most UK homes have a single-phase supply, on which the same chargers deliver up to about 7.4kW. Your electricity network operator can tell you whether a three-phase supply is available and what an upgrade would involve.

The car limits AC charging too. Many cars accept a maximum of 7kW or 11kW on AC, so a 22kW charger only charges at 22kW when both the supply and the car support it.

22kW three-phase EV chargers: questions

Will a 22kW charger work on a single-phase supply?

The chargers listed here are sold as separate single-phase and three-phase versions, or as a three-phase model that can switch to single-phase. On a single-phase supply, home charging is limited to about 7.4kW.

How do I know if my home has a three-phase supply?

A three-phase supply typically has three main fuses at the incoming supply, rather than one. An electrician or your network operator can confirm it.
