Before you book an installer in Belfast

How the job runs, who your network operator is, and the four checks to make on any installer.

  1. Choose your charger

Pick the charger before you ask for quotes, so every installer prices the same job. We compare 26 home chargers A to Z; 25 of them have PEN fault protection built in, which usually means no earth rod.

  2. Survey and a written quote

Most installers start with photos or a visit: where your consumer unit is, the cable route to the parking space, your main fuse and your earthing. Ask for a fixed price in writing that includes VAT and any extra work.

  3. Your network operator: NIE Networks

Your installer tells NIE Networks about a new charger. Most single-phase home chargers can be fitted first and notified afterwards; if your supply needs work, such as a bigger main fuse or splitting a shared (looped) supply, the operator has to approve it first.

  4. Installation day

A standard installation usually takes two to four hours: a new circuit from your consumer unit, the charger on the wall, safety checks and testing. You should get an electrical installation certificate for the new circuit.

  5. Set it up and charge for less

Connect the app, set a schedule and switch to an EV tariff. The cheapest overnight rate we compare is 6.5p/kWh, on Intelligent Octopus Go and E.ON Next Drive Smart (November 2026).

Belfast's network operator: NIE Networks

NIE Networks runs the network across Northern Ireland. Your installer notifies the operator, or asks it first if your supply needs work.

Grants in Northern Ireland

If you rent, or own a flat with private off-street parking, the EV chargepoint grant can cover 75% of the cost of buying and installing a chargepoint, up to £500. It applies across the UK, and only an OZEV-authorised installer can claim it. Northern Ireland also has its own support schemes.

Pick the charger first, then the tariff

Installers quote for a named charger, so choose it before you ask. Once it is fitted, an EV tariff is where the savings are.

Tariffs in Northern Ireland

The EV tariffs we compare are for Great Britain; suppliers in Northern Ireland price differently, and VAT on household electricity there stays at 5%.

How we built these listings

  • Every listing fits EV chargers

For 140 firms we found EV charger work on their own website; for 81, Google lists them as an EV charger installer or specialist. Each card says which.

  • Ratings are Google's

Stars and review counts come from each firm's Google listing, checked June to July 2026. We never rate installers ourselves.

  • Nobody pays for their place

Each city lists its local firms first, then the national networks, and each group runs by number of Google reviews. If a firm ever pays to be featured, it sits in its own labelled frame and never changes the list. How we make money
