Pick the charger before you ask for quotes, so every installer prices the same job. We compare 26 home chargers A to Z; 25 of them have PEN fault protection built in, which usually means no earth rod.
Most installers start with photos or a visit: where your consumer unit is, the cable route to the parking space, your main fuse and your earthing. Ask for a fixed price in writing that includes VAT and any extra work.
Your installer tells National Grid Electricity Distribution about a new charger. Most single-phase home chargers can be fitted first and notified afterwards; if your supply needs work, such as a bigger main fuse or splitting a shared (looped) supply, the operator has to approve it first.
A standard installation usually takes two to four hours: a new circuit from your consumer unit, the charger on the wall, safety checks and testing. You should get an electrical installation certificate for the new circuit.
